DAP rep held in drug raid

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police here raided a nightclub that was operating with a family KTV licence – and landed more than they had expected.

A DAP state assemblyman from Perak was among 48 people arrested at the club in Prai near here.

Police said he had tested positive for drugs, along with 35 others.

The assemblyman’s lawyer, Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, confirmed that the man arrested on Thursday night was Pasir Bedamar assemblyman Terence Naidu.

Naidu, 54, is now being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

He is a two-term DAP assemblyman and a lawyer.

Penang Narcotics Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said the assemblyman was remanded for a day and had since been released on police bail while waiting for the laboratory report.

“His first urine test came back positive, but police will wait for the report of his urine sample from the laboratory.

“Once that is done, we will send the investigation paper to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for the next course of action,” he said.

ACP Mustafa said that of the 48 arrested, 36 tested positive for drugs. Of the number, 28 were men. All were aged between 21 and 70.

He said 12 of those arrested were foreign women, with investigations now centred around whether they were there with friends or were involved in vice activities.

“The premises were previously used as a nightclub and now, it was operating using a family KTV licence.

“In fact, the layout has remained the same as a nightclub,” he said, adding that there were 82 people in the nightclub during the raid.
