Floods: Jelebu fish breeders suffer RM12mil in losses

JELEBU: Some 50 freshwater fish breeders here suffered losses totalling almost RM12mil after their farms were inundated by floodwater on Saturday (Dec 18).

District Fisheries Department head Mohd Azhar Jusoh said hundreds of thousands of fish of various species which were ready to be sold were destroyed after the farms were submerged.

He said the flooding was compounded when oxygen supply to the farms was also affected due to a power failure.

"The longest fish can survive without oxygen is about four hours.

"In some instances, the ponds were also breached by mud and floodwater," he told Sinar Harian.

Mohd Azhar said the breeders also lost equipment and fish feed in the floods.
