Aid pours in for flood victims

ISKANDAR PUTERI: Despite his family’s concern for his safety, Chong Khai Siang said he could not sit idle knowing there were flood victims who needed help.

The business development director, 36, said he was moved after watching videos of flood victims on social media.

“These people need help now as they are badly affected by the floods,” said Chong.

He was among the Southern Volunteers (SV) personnel sent by the Johor government to Hulu Langat in Selangor to provide humanitarian aid there yesterday.

State government deputy secretary On Jabbar, who is SV’s humanitarian contingent chief, said 37 volunteers have been sent to Hulu Langat.

“(The victims) need basics such as mineral water, diapers for babies and adults, sanitary pads, biscuits and bread,” he said during the flagging-off ceremony at Iskandar Puteri yesterday.

On said that about RM50,000 worth of aid would be provided.

“This is the first phase. In the second phase, we are hoping to help clean affected houses.

“For that, we are waiting for the green light from the Selangor government on when and how many volunteers are needed,” he said.

In Ipoh, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the Perak government would also be sending aid to flood victims.
