GPS wins Mulu seat

KUCHING: Results for the Mulu seat in favour of Gabungan Parti Sarawak – which has already won the state election with a landslide victory – was the cherry on top of the coalition’s cake.

Albeit the results were made known only at noon yesterday, it was nonetheless a cause for celebration for the coalition.

Mulu’s success further secured GPS’ position in the state legislative assembly.

Its candidate and incumbent Datuk Gerawat Gala won handsomely with a 2,875-vote majority, beating three other contenders.

With the win, GPS now officially has 76 of the 82 seats, doing much better than its last election outing in 2016 where it took 72 seats.

Local Opposition outfit Parti Sarawak Bersatu won four seats while DAP won two.

Other rival parties including PKR were wiped out.

The Election Commission could not officially announce the results for Mulu on Saturday as several ballot boxes – which had to be flown in by helicopters – could not be delivered to the constituency’s official tallying centre due to bad weather.

However, there were telltale signs that GPS had won in Mulu as Gerawat was seen together with the rest of the coalition’s candidates at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the EC announced that voter turnout for the state polls was at 60.67% or 759,627 voters comprising regular, early and postal voters.

This election saw Tupong incumbent Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman securing the biggest majority with 11,209 votes while the slimmest was 93 votes for See Chee How, who won the Batu Lintang Seat for PSB.

Fazzruddin is also the candidate who had the most number of votes with 12,544 while Independent candidate for Tanjong Batu Wong Hou Ming only managed to get 38 votes.
