Movement of containers, cargo expected to be delayed due to floods, says PKA

PORT KLANG: The movement of containers and cargo at Port Klang’s three terminals is expected to be adversely affected due to the heavy downpour and flooding in Klang and Port Klang.

In a statement issued Saturday (Dec 18), the Port Klang Authority (PKA) said deliveries will also be delayed because of this.

“Priority will be given to deliveries of essential goods, particularly food items, medical supplies and refrigerated goods," the statement read.

It added that operations were also affected in Northport, Westport and Southport due to damages to access roads in the areas due to the flooding.

“To make matters worse, many port and logistics operations staff are unable to report to work due to travel difficulties," the statement added.

It said vessel berthing would also be delayed as the inclement weather has caused a backlog of vessels at the outer anchorage and many more ships were also expected to arrive over the coming days.

“Port Klang Authority is working closely with the port and logistics industry players to optimise available resources and do everything possible to ensure the continuance of port and logistics operations," the statement read.

It called upon terminal operators, forwarding agents, haulier companies and goods clearing government agencies to come together to assist and ensure goods are able to reach the markets on time.

The statement also appealed to the public to exercise patience while the relevant terminals, companies and agencies navigated through the current challenges.

It also called upon the shipping fraternity to be united and resilient as well as to be compassionate during the trying times.

“We urge the port and logistics community to extend the required aid to local communities who are affected by the floods by reaching out to your community leaders to find out how you can be of assistance,’’ it said.
