MELAKA: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says he is visiting the historic city as a tourist and not to campaign for the Melaka election.

He said he had been obliged to visit Melaka following the invitation by Tangga Batu Umno chief Datuk Seri Mohamad Ali Mohamad to make a trip here.

"I came to meet my old friends (at Pantai Kundor and Tanjung Kling) and it's not considered as campaigning for the upcoming polls," he said after his visit to Kampung Hailam fishermen's jetty on Saturday (Oct 30).

Najib said he was also satisfied with the facilities made available to the fishermen at Kampung Hailam during the then Barisan Nasional-led state government.

Last week, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced a ban on election-related gatherings for the Melaka election.

The Election Commission would be also announcing the SOP for the state election soon.

The Election Commission has set Nov 8 as Nomination day and Nov 20 for polling for the Melaka election.
