PETALING JAYA: The government coalition will avoid parties clashing during the upcoming Melaka state election, says the Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that a meeting between the high-committee members of government parties would be held to strategise the plan.

"I have been given the mandate to hold a meeting between the party leaders to discuss avoiding clashes between government candidates during the state election.

"The clash of candidates would not be good for us and will benefit the other side (Opposition), which we do not want to happen," the Umno vice-president said in a press conference after the Hari Belia Negara 2021 celebration in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (Oct 30).

On Friday (Oct 29), Umno said it will maintain its cooperation with PAS under the Muafakat Nasional charter in the upcoming Melaka state election on Nov 20, according to party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

Umno is not part of Perikatan Nasional which comprises Bersatu, PAS, Sabah STAR, Gerakan and SAPP.

Nominations for the Melaka state election would take place on Nov 8 while polling day has been set for Nov 20.
