Bukit Aman probes Twitter account over fake news related to Covid-19 vaccine

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman is investigating a Twitter account for allegedly spreading fake news on a list of 41 teachers who supposedly died due to Covid-19 vaccine.

Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Abd Jalil Hassan said the police have received a report lodged by the Health Ministry on the fake news, which was posted on Twitter on Oct 8.

"The tweet received 52 retweets, 1,168 quote tweets and 70 likes.

"It received various feedback and reactions from social media users," he said in a statement on Saturday (Oct 9) night.

The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for disseminating lies and Section 505(c) for inciting a group of people to commit offence on another group of people, he added.

"It is also being investigated under Section 233 Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network facilities," he said.

Comm Abd Jalil reminded the public to be wary of certain parties who attempt to disrupt the vaccination programme.

"We urge the public to be responsible social media users and not spread unverified news or information.

"We will take stern action against anyone who blatantly disrupt public order and safety," he said.
