Drug peddling a family affair for senior citizen

MELAKA: Police have detained six members of a family who turned drug peddling into a lucrative business.

Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said police first detained a 64-year-old head of the family known as “Misai” before apprehending his sons and daughter-in-law, a few days later.

“The senior citizen was found to be the mastermind of the drug peddling gang and has been involved in the illegal activity for some time now by roping in his sons and daughter-in-law.

“We confiscated 7.5kg of the substance worth some RM223,000 from the family’s home at Kampung Hilir, Kuala Sungai Baru in Alor Gajah,” he said on Tuesday (Sept 28).

DCP Abdul Majid said the sons of the mastermind in their 20s and 21-year-old daughter-in-law were allegedly peddling drugs to dozens of addicts throughout the state.

He said four of the family members tested positive for drugs during screening.

“The four had previous police records relating to drug abuses,” he added.

DCP Abdul Majid said police also seized a car and RM3,000 cash during the raid at the house recently.

He added that all the suspects are currently under remand to assist with the investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1852 which carries a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
