Cops respond to teen’s tweet on dad abusing mum

KUALA LUMPUR: Tired of watching his father assaulting his mother, a 14-year-old boy took to Twitter to ask for help.

In the incident which occurred on Monday, the boy alleged that he was kicked in the ribs by his father while trying to stop him from beating his mother.

In his tweets, the boy alleged that his father normalised assaulting women. A few hours later when the father realised what his son had done, he attacked him again.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Ashari Abu Samah said police detected a tweet about the alleged incident on Monday.

“Our checks revealed a 44-year-old woman and her teen son were beaten by a 44-year-old man at their residence at Taman Melati Utama.

“The tweet as well as a loud racket from their residence also caused neighbours to step in,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said police also went to the scene and took the woman and her son to the Wangsa Maju police station for further action.

“Investigations revealed a fight occurred at 11.30am on Aug 9. The suspect had scolded and accused the woman of taking his money.

“The woman kept quiet but her silence infuriated the man and he continued to beat her,” he said.

He said the son then tweeted about the incident, which went viral.“The man found out about it at around 1.17pm on the same day and attacked his son.

“The victim lodged a report at the Wangsa Maju police station for fear of his safety and that of his family members,” he said.

Supt Ashari said the suspect has been arrested and would be remanded for investigations.

“We urge anyone with information on the case or similar cases to come forward immediately,” he said adding that those with information could contact the Wangsa Maju police headquarters at 03-9289 9222, or the City Police Hotline at 03-2146 0584 or 03-2146 0585.
