KOTA KINABALU: The state government has decided to further restrict business operation hours in Tawau and Kalabakan from 9am to 5pm daily due to the worsening number of Covid-19 cases and the rate of transmissions in these two areas.
Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the restricted hours would apply to eateries, food trucks, markets, supermarkets, pet stores, petrol stations, electrical shops, car wash and e-commerce activities.
Masidi – the minister in charge of Covid-19 matters in Sabah - said this rule will be in effect until further notice.
As of Saturday (June 5), Tawau recorded the highest number of new cases in the state with a total of 58 and a death, while Kalabakan recorded two new cases.
Additionally, about a dozen localities in Tawau are under an enhanced movement control order, including Kampung Blok 31, Kg Sentosa Blok 5 Hilltop, and Kampung Bukit Kukusan in Tanjung Batu, which will be placed under the enhanced MCO from Monday (June 7) to June 20.
Others like Taman Millenium, Taman Wawasan, Semarak, and Kampung Jawa Kongsi 10 are under an EMCO until June 18, while Felda Umas 4 in Kalabakan will also be under lockdown from June 7 to June 20.
Tawau has been recording a high number of Covid-19 cases over the past few months compared to other districts in Sabah.
There are also more localities that have been placed under an EMCO in this district compared to other areas in Sabah.
Its residents have on various occasions staged demonstrations to urge for a lift of the EMCO, such as in Kg Muhibbah Jaya and Kg Baru Pasir Putih in April.
