Cops to take statement from Awie, others allegedly violating SOP in viral video

PETALING JAYA: The police will be taking statements from all individuals involved in a viral video involving Malaysian rock legend Datuk Ahmad Azhar Othman, who allegedly violated Covid-19 standard operating procedures.

Sinar Harian reported that action is being taken involving Ahmad Azhar - better known as Awie - after a police report was received about a 42-second video clip that has gone viral on social media.

"The video shows that Awie and several individuals have violated the recovery MCO SOP while attending a humanitarian mission ceremony at a hotel in Jalan Hang Tuan, Melaka," said state CID chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Sukri Kaman

"All those involved in this case, including Awie and the organizer of the program, will be called to the Melaka Tengah District Police Headquarters (IPD) to give a statement," he added Sunday (May 9).

ACP Mohd Sukri said the investigation will be done immediately and will be referred to the Melaka State Director of Prosecution's office for any decision.

"The investigation was conducted under Section 21A of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and Regulation 18, Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Control of Rehabilitation Movement) Regulations," he said.

The police have requested all individuals involved or those with information regarding the incident to come to the Central Melaka IPD to assist in the investigation.

"The public is advised to always abide by the recovery MCO SOP and failure to do so will cause wrongdoers to be prosecuted under the law," he said.
