'Still the rock star' Legendary singer Awie, despite health issues, rocks at Wings Sunday Night Live at Hard Rock Cafe KL

Legendary vocalist Awie admitted to facing challenges as he has not fully recovered from bronchitis while performing at the Wings Sunday Night Live showcase at Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur recently.

According to Awie, his health condition initially raised concerns about whether he would be able to deliver the best performance to his fans.

The showcase was organised as a result of the collaboration between Awie Entertainment, Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur, and RPM Label in conjunction with the promotion of Wings' latest album, in addition to serving as a platform to introduce the group's new works to fans.

Throughout the nearly two-hour performance, Wings played songs from their latest album, including "Dari Tuhan, Entah Kiri Entah Kanan, Tirai Horizon, Hutan Simpan, Ingatkan Dia, Kalifah Empat, Sekeping Kertas Bermaruah, Hukum Karma, Sayap Ilusi, Malam Gelisah, Peronda Jaket Biru, Opera Hidup, Awang Thrasher, Sejati, and Misteri Mimpi Syakilla". The band also entertained the audience with several hit songs that are fan favourites.

The "Wings Sunday Night Live" series will continue at Hard Rock Cafe Melaka on July 12, giving fans in the southern part of the country the opportunity to witness an energetic performance from the legendary rock band.

Awie, whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Othman, 58, said he requested permission to be discharged from the ward earlier after being hospitalised for three days last week to fulfil commitments for several jobs that had been agreed upon earlier.

"Actually, I have been struggling with bronchitis attacks for almost two months." My voice sounds hoarse because of the cough, and my nose is still blocked.

"I had a lung infection and was hospitalised for three days, recently." The doctor didn't allow me to go back, but I had to leave because I had work. Time doesn't permit.

"Thankfully, I was able to finish the performance with my friends tonight," he said when met after the showcase.

He said again that he is still undergoing treatment and needs to go back and forth to the hospital to receive nebuliser treatment in addition to taking the medications recommended by the doctor.

"Now I am still taking medication." When singing, I also have to take cough medicine because my throat sometimes gets dry and phlegmy. I need to moisten my throat so that my voice comes out more easily.

"I also have other appointments with the doctor." There are three or four doctors who continuously monitor my condition," he shared.

Commenting on the decision to continue performing despite not being fully recovered, Awie admitted that the action was risky, but the responsibility towards his career and fans remained the main focus.

"I am grateful to have completed the work. Most importantly, the task is complete. I don't know how my voice sounds in front, but on stage, I feel okay," Awie added.

Although not in good health, the veteran rock icon still delivered an energetic performance for nearly two hours.

There were times when his voice sounded nasal and hoarse, but the strong support of 700 fans or Wings' Wings, who sang along to every song, injected the singer with the spirit to complete the performance.

At once, Wings' appearance brought the night to life with nostalgia as they performed nearly 20 songs, including a new piece titled 'Khalifah Empat'.

Wings, supported by Syam (guitar), Edrie Hashim (guitar), Ilham Ishak or Am (bass), and Pae (drums), also reminisced about the glory days of live band performances around the 2000s when they returned to the stage at Hard Rock Cafe, a location that once served as one of their 'homes' in the past.

On July 12 (Sunday), this iconic rock band will shake up Hard Rock Cafe Melaka through the same segment, Winngs Sunday Night Live, organised in collaboration with Awie Entertainment, Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur, and RPM Label.
