Covid-19: Centenarian among first in Sibu to receive first dose of vaccine

SIBU: A 100-year-old man was among the first vaccinated here in the second phase of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme which kicked off on Monday (April 19).

A total of 924 people received their vaccine doses at the Sibu Indoor Stadium here, and all of them are senior citizens aged 75 and above or otherwise high risk – such as those with comorbidities.

People with disabilities (OKU) were also included but none of them were among the 924 vaccinated.

A total of 96 Health Ministry personnel were involved in the programme, including 20 who were administering the vaccine.

Speaking when officiating the event, Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee said 140 health workers would also receive their first dose later in the day.

"The process today is a bit slow as it involves senior citizens, and we need to be extra careful to prevent any unexpected event from happening. But we are ready as we have doctors and ambulances on standby," he said.

Dr Annuar added that the 924 recipients would have to come back for the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine in two weeks time.

"There will be more to come after this one but it depends on the supply of the vaccine. The recipients will be informed early about the next phase," he said.

Meanwhile, Committee chairman Wong Hee Sieng said more than 80% of the population in the Sibu Division had registered for the vaccine through the MySejahtera app.

"Sibu Division has the most number of people registered for the program, accounting to over 200,000 people from a total population of 300,000. Out of this, 50% of them have been accepted as recipients by Putrajaya as their names are already in the waiting list," he said.

Wong said their target was to have 70% of the population in the Division to register for the program.

After Sibu, the second phase of the immunisation programme will start on April 23 in Kuching, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Kapit, Mukah and Miri divisions.

It will be followed by Samarahan, Bintulu and Limbang divisions on April 24 and Sarikei on April 30.
