Covid-19: Two new clusters involving close contacts of teachers, students in Sabah detected, says Masidi

KOTA KINABALU: Two new clusters involving the close contacts of teachers and students in Sipitang and Keningau have been recorded in Sabah.

The two clusters of Kampung Malaman in Sipitang involved six cases, while Kampung Padang Tembak in Keningau had six cases as well.

Minister in charge on Covid-19 matters in Sabah, Datuk Masidi Manjun said for the Kampung Malaman cluster, the index case was a pregnant primary school teacher who tested positive for the virus prior to her admission to hospital recently.

After she tested positive, four other teachers, a canteen worker and seven students were subsequently found to have also contracted the virus.

As for the Keningau cluster, the index case was a 15-year-old student who travelled to Labuan on March 7.

The student had been to several of his relatives’ houses in Keningau, Masidi said.

“Authorities are still conducting contact tracing for both clusters, ” he said.

He said that Sabah recorded 73 new cases and a death in Kudat district on Thursday (March 18).

A total of 374 patients are still being treated for the virus at various hospitals and treatment centres statewide.

The cumulative total of Covid-19 cases in Sabah is 54,074, with 20 of them in intensive care and four under ventilator support.
