Kindergarten principal remanded three days after toddler found dead in her car

ALOR SETAR: A female kindergarten principal has been remanded for three days to assist in investigations into the death of a toddler who was left in a car believed to belong to her on Tuesday (March 15).

The remand order was issued by Sungai Petani Court Assistant Registrar Mohammad Aliff Abd Aziz on Wednesday (March 17) morning.

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Adzli Abu Shah said the 49-year-old suspect was remanded for three days to allow police to carry out further investigations.

The victim’s mother, a civil servant attached to the Survey and Mapping Department in Komtar, Penang, said she received news of the incident from a teacher at the kindergarten at 12.25pm Tuesday.

“I rushed to Sungai Petani from my workplace in Penang.

“I also alerted my husband and asked him to rush there to check on the condition of our son. I sensed something was wrong when I heard the teacher crying as she told me my son was unconscious inside the car.

“My husband later told me to go straight to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, ” she said.

ACO Adzli had said earlier that preliminary investigations revealed that the kindergarten principal allegedly left the toddler in her car that was parked outside the kindergarten for more than four hours.

"At 12.15pm, when the principal wanted to take the boy home, she realised that he was not in school.

"When she rushed to the vehicle, the victim was already unconscious," he said in a statement Wednesday.

ACP Adzli said the kindergarten principal then contacted the hospital and tried to revive the victim by doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but the victim was still lying motionless.

ACP Adzli said the principal was arrested by police to assist in investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

The victim's parents claimed his body at 12.36pm and will be buried at the Raudathul Solihin Mosque Muslim cemetery in Sungai Petani later Wednesday.
