IGP: Only those with high integrity have staying power in the police force

SHAH ALAM: Police personnel and officers with high integrity will be able to withstand any challenges in the course of their duties, says Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

The Inspector-General of Police said more officers and personnel are becoming more aware of the need to reject certain negative cultures in the police force.

"Senior officers such as Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay are a good example.

"I knew him for a long time since he was in Special Branch. He is firm, brave and he has high integrity.

"I expect such officers and personnel will be able to face and overcome any challenge," he said in an interview with Tan Sri Johan Jaafar during a Sinar Harian's Facebook live show on Wednesday (March 17).

He was asked whether brave police officers such as Comm Ayob have staying power in the police force.

"Those with high integrity in the police force are many but coincidentally Comm Ayob stands out due to his braveness.

"There are others who are like that but they have their own style while carrying out their duties," he added.

As he is expected to retire in May, the IGP said one of his main missions was to rebuild and strengthened the image of the police force and regain the trust of the public.

"The efforts are still being carried out until today.

"I cannot measure whether I have succeeded or otherwise, it is up to the people to decide," he said.

He also praised the actions of Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Zamri Yahya in lifting the lid on the lavish lifestyle of certain corrupt police officers and personnel.

"Such revelations might not be popular among other police personnel or retired ones, but the police cannot afford to hide such things as the police serve the people, who deserve the best service.

"Let the people know that we will not protect or be in cahoots with those involved in illegal activities," he added.

Abdul Hamid said JIPS will be instructed to investigate if there are reports of wrongdoings involving those in the police force.

"I encourage more whistleblowers to come forward.

"Stern action will be taken against those who are corrupt or involved in illegal activities," he said.

Abdul Hamid also praised the efforts of those in the police force, who go above and beyond their call of duty such as Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal.

"Such acts get the admiration of the people and I encouraged the extra steps taken.

"If the efforts are good and helping the people, by all means, go ahead," he said.
