PETALING JAYA: The Sungai Udang Prison and staff quarters in Melaka have been placed under enhanced movement control order after recording over 100 Covid-19 cases, said Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
"The Health Ministry reported a dramatic increase in cases at the prison and the quarters.
"As of Jan 31, the ministry has carried out 339 screenings, of which 113 positive Covid-19 cases were recorded, involving 79 inmates, 22 prison staff and five of their family members," he said in a statement on Monday (Feb 1).
Based on the advice and risk assessment by the ministry, he said the government agreed to implement the EMCO at the prison and staff quarters from Feb 3 to 16.
On another matter, the Senior Minister (Security) said a total of 6,641 foreign workers were screened on Sunday (Jan 31), with 85 being tested positive for Covid-19.
On the whole, he said, 265,770 foreign workers under 10,973 employers had been screened since Dec 1.
Of those screened, 4,867 tested positive for the virus while 260,903 were negative, he added.
Ismail Sabri noted that 890 clinics were involved in the screening exercise.
He reminded employers that as of Feb 1, all employers must ensure that their workers are screened, with them bearing the cost of screening.
