Cops disregarded self-interest for the people in difficult year, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: All Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) officers and personnel remain resolute and committed in safeguarding the people despite the risk of Covid-19 infection during a tumultuous year, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador (pic).

He added such sacrifice was warranted to ensure the safety and security of the people.

“Police personnel and officers who disregard their own self-interest for the sake of the public should be commended.

“We should pray to Allah for protection from any form of danger, and may our sacrifice be rewarded by the Almighty, ” he said in his New Year message on Thursday (Dec 31).

The country’s top cop, who wished all Malaysian a Happy New Year, said 2020 tested everyone with the emergence of an unexpected enemy - Covid-19 - which has killed millions of people all over the world.

“The spread of the virus have forced the government to implement the movement control order (MCO), which was enforced on March 18.

“The MCO, which went through several phases, is a smart move to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the rakyat and the economy.

“The police was given the mandate as the leading enforcement agency in the frontlines to discipline and educate the people on adhering to standard operating procedures (SOP), ” he added.

While there were many men and women in the police force who were ready to sacrifice their lives to defend the country, there were also still some who would sell their self-worth and gambled away the force’s image by being involved in corruption and abuse of power, the IGP said.

“We established the PDRM Anti-Corruption Plan this year to regain the public’s confidence in the police force.

“We hope the plan will be fully embraced by all in the force.”

He also called on all personnel and officers to give the best service to the people and the nation while maintaining a high integrity.

“May 2021 brings blessings and good fortunes for all of us, ” he added.
