Govt tables amendment to increase amount for Covid-19 Fund

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has tabled an amendment to increase the amount for the Covid-19 Fund under the Temporary Measures For Government Financing (Coronavirus Disease 2019) Act.

Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz (pic) tabled the amendments to provide an additional amount for several programmes listed under the economic stimulus package and economy recovery plans.

The amendment was also to allow the total amount allocated for all the programmes to be increased from RM45bil to RM65bil.

Tengku Zafrul had tabled the amendments for the first reading on Monday (Nov 30) and the second reading will also be in the current Dewan Rakyat meeting.

In August this year, the Temporary Measures for Government Financing (Coronavirus Disease 2019) Act was passed to set up a RM45bil Covid-19 fund.

Apart from setting up the fund, the law will also allow the government borrowings to raise the permissible statutory debt level ratio of 55% of the gross domestic product to 60%.
