National pneumococcal conjugate vaccine programme to begin Dec 1, says Health DG

PUTRAJAYA: The national pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) programme will be kicking off this Dec 1, says the Health Ministry.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah (pic) said children born this year onwards (from Jan 1,2020) are entitled to get pneumococcal vaccine jabs at the ministry’s health clinics.

“Parents must make appointments at the ministry’s health clinics to avoid congestion and to ensure compliance towards new norms as part of Covid-19 prevention efforts, ” said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement on Tuesday (Nov 24).

Dr Noor Hisham said the vaccines will be given in three doses, which consist of two primer doses at the age of four months and six months, followed by a booster dose at the age of 15 months.

He said the pneumococcal vaccines that will be used under the first two years of the national programme is the PCV-10 (Synflorix) vaccine.

“The PCV-10 vaccine provides protection from 10 serotypes pneumococcal bacteria, including serotypes 1,4, 5,6B, 7F, 9V, 14,18C, 19F and 23F.

“The vaccine also gives cross-reactivity protection against serotype 19A, ” he said.
