Malaysia, Singapore to finalise RTS link border laws by June 30

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Singapore have agreed to finalise their respective domestic laws governing the cross-border operations of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link by June 30.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said the timeline would ensure the legislation is ready for full enforcement by Sept 30.

"This timeline was agreed upon in the supplementary agreement developed as part of the process to operationalise the RTS Link and was finalised during the 12th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat on Dec 4 last year.

"The government is confident that the powers provided under the Bill will safeguard national sovereignty and interests, including protection for Malaysian enforcement officers stationed in Singapore (at Woodlands North Station),” he told the Dewan Rakyat when tabling the second reading of the Johor Baru-Singapore RTS Link Bill 2026 on Wednesday (Feb 11).

He said the Bill aimed to enable monitoring and enforcement for the operation of the RTS Link connecting Bukit Chagar Station in Johor Baru and Woodlands North Station in Singapore, without affecting existing laws.

Deputy Speaker Alice Lau Kiong Yieng said debate on the Bill would begin on Thursday (Feb 12).- Bernama
