I don't own shares in any company, claiming otherwise is defamatory, says Azam Baki

PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Azam Baki says he no longer owns any shares in any company, inlcuding Velocity Capital Partner Bhd.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner said claims that he still holds shares in the company are false.

Azam said he sold his shares in Velocity Capital Partner Bhd in July 2025.

"It's very malicious.

"I don't own any shares of any company. My account is zero," he said during a press conference on Wednesday (Feb 11).

Azam said he proactively declared his shareholdings in July 2025 through the official Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS) well before the five-year deadline stipulated under civil service regulations.

He added that an authorised officer could retrieve the documentation at any time.

"It is a government system. Within a second, he (Chief Secretary to the Government) can print it out," he said.

Addressing the controversy surrounding Velocity Capital Bhd, Azam said he did not profit from the sale of Velocity Capital shares.

He said it is not illegal for government officers to trade in shares, provided there is no conflict of interest and proper declaration is made.

"As a citizen of Malaysia, I have a right to buy shares, trade it, as long as it's not illegal," he said.

Azam also dismissed allegations he holds shares in other companies, including Awanbiru Technology Bhd, and challenged critics to produce evidence if they believe otherwise.

"If I am lying, you can call the police. I don't have a single unit," he said.

He said all he funded all previous share tradings with his personal savings, pension and retirement gratuity, not loans or external sources.

"I have more than enough – my long-term pension plus my savings," he said.

He reiterated that asset declarations by senior civil servants is governed by internal administrative procedures.

"There is no law that says I have to declare it to the public," he said.

Azam said any narrative suggesting he still holds shares worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit is defamatory and not supported by official records.
