JOHOR BARU: Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar has proclaimed that Pasir Gudang is a city, the third in the state after Johor Baru and Iskandar Puteri.
According to a statement posted on the Sultan’s official Facebook page, the Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (MPPG) would henceforth be known as the Pasir Gudang City Council (MBPG).
The proclamation document was signed and handed to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad at a ceremony at Istana Pasir Pelangi here on Sunday (Nov 22).
“In line with its proclamation as a city, the president’s post will now be upgraded to that of a mayor, ” read the statement.
Meanwhile at a press conference at the state administration centre of Kota Iskandar in Iskandar Puteri, Hasni introduced former Mersing District Officer Asman Shah Abd Rahman as the new Pasir Gudang mayor effective Sunday.
Hasni also thanked Zainor Adani, who had previously helmed the MPPG as its president for his efforts and assistance in getting Pasir Gudang upgraded to a city.
He added that Pasir Gudang has 533,868 residents with an annual revenue collection of RM127.2mil from 90,758 tax payers.
“With the status upgrade, I hope that the MBPG staff will carry on being competent in their tasks and services for the city’s continuous development, ” said Hasni.
Pasir Gudang was a former fishing village that has since been transformed into one of Malaysia’s biggest industrial zones as well as a major contributor to Johor’s growth and progress.
It was declared a municipality on July 1 2008.
