Lazada lauds Budget allocation for ecommerce and digitalisation

LAZADA Malaysia applauds the Government for the tabling of Budget 2021, which demonstrates an active move to further solidify ecommerce and ewallets to encourage more businesses to go online and into the digital sphere.

“We also appreciate the various initiatives and programmes that are focused on strengthening SMEs’ resilience in a post-Covid era, ” said Lazada Malaysia CEO Leo Chow.

“We are pleased that the Government continues to recognise the value of ecommerce enterprises and their role in bolstering the nation’s digital economy.

“Having onboarded around 50,000 local SMEs onto Lazada this year, we remain committed to supporting local businesses to shift gears to online solutions.

“We have been working closely with the Government on their Penjana micro and SMEs ecommerce, Penjana Shop Malaysia Online, Buy Malaysia and Selangor e-Bazar initiatives, and have seen the positive business benefits for SMEs during this challenging period.

“As such, we are appreciative of the total allocation of RM300mil for the continuation of the Penjana micro and SMEs ecommerce and Shop Malaysia Online campaigns, which will further encourage online shopping and serve to benefit over 500,000 local SMEs to help them reap the benefits of the digital economy.

“As we move towards becoming a cashless society, ewallets will continue to play an important role in providing secure and stable payment methods for Malaysians.

“The RM75mil allocation for the eBelia programme to promote a cashless lifestyle is a very welcomed step in the right direction towards secure, convenient, and light-speed digital transactions.

“We find it incredibly encouraging that the Government has laid emphasis on the burgeoning trend of ewallets which has become an integral feature of the new normal, especially on our platform.

“Our Lazada Wallet, which is powered by Alibaba’s deep expertise in technology and experience of payment processing and fraud management services, has become the go-to payment option on our platform.

“Today, one in three Lazada Malaysia customers chooses Lazada Wallet for their online transactions. This is further illustrated in past campaigns such as our 7.7 Mid-Year Super Sale, during which Lazada Wallet was the most preferred payment method, with a close to 40% year-on-year increase in adoption.

“In addition, the allocations to improve digital connectivity through Jendela and other contributions which will increase Internet access for the B40 segment, are all initiatives that will create a more inclusive digital society.

“We also warmly welcome the inclusion of delivery riders in the Socso employment injury scheme benefitting 40,000 riders nationwide, as we are cognizant of those in the logistics sector who work tirelessly to support Lazada’s ecommerce business to serve our customers on a daily basis.

“Our efforts are in line with what we have always stood for here at Lazada – a more level playing field and equal opportunities for small businesses that do not have the sufficient financial means to pull big moves in the market.

“To that end, we are immensely grateful that the Government has echoed this similar sentiment through the initiatives planned as per Budget 2021.

“Lazada stands ready to support and work closely with the government on those activities, ” said Chow.
