Umno agrees to political ceasefire to ensure fight against Covid-19 bears fruit, says Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: Umno will undertake a political ceasefire to ensure efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic bear fruit, says its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said the party will also support the Perikatan Nasional government’s initiatives to help the people and the country to face the pandemic, as well as economic uncertainties.

“I have also directed all party leaders who are in the Cabinet to focus on helping the people and lessen their burden, ” he said in a statement Wednesday (Oct 21)

Zahid also pointed out the need for all parties in Perikatan to strengthen cooperation to guarantee political stability while facing economic challenges and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Umno Youth had earlier called for a political ceasefire and for politicians to focus their efforts on national reconciliation instead.

Its chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had said that the current Covid-19 situation was troubling as cases continue to be on the rise while the economy is shrinking, which has directly affected the livelihood of the people.

The call was made in the wake of Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Oct 13, claiming he had the “formidable and convincing” support of lawmakers to form a new government, although he did not provide the names to verify his claim.
