Colorectal surgeon among nine global experts conferred prestigious fellowship

PETALING JAYA: Another Malaysian has done the country proud.

The latest achievement was through Universiti Malaya’s Prof Dr April Camilla Roslani (pic), who has been conferred an Honorary Fellowship by the American College of Surgeons.

The Department of Surgery head is the only woman among nine global surgical experts to receive the honour.

She is the second expert from the Faculty of Medicine to be internationally recognised in recent weeks.

Department of Medical Microbiology head Dr Chan Yoke Fun received the coveted Asean-US Science Prize for Women 2020 recently.

Dr April Camilla described it as a “huge honour” and a complete surprise.

“I feel humbled to receive this on the same platform as other distinguished surgeons.

“It’s a recognition that the standard of medicine and surgery in Malaysia is on par with other developed countries.

“We should be proud as it provides us with a voice. It also gives me the ability to influence the direction of surgical care in the country and region,” Dr April Camilla said in an interview. On her long-term plans, she said she would focus on training and educating surgeons.

The colorectal surgeon hopes to enhance the professionalism in Malaysia’s training environment by making it more structured, objective and outcome-based.

“I want to improve the treatment of colorectal diseases, in particular colorectal cancer.

“It is the second most common cancer in the country after breast cancer.

“Due to low public awareness, many patients do not realise that it is highly treatable and preventable,” she said.

Presently, as the country battles the resurgence in Covid-19 cases, Dr April Camilla said the surgical fraternity should ensure surgical care was not compromised while safeguarding patients and healthcare providers with adequate safety measures.

A University of Wales graduate, Dr April Camilla has produced about 80 academic research publications.

She is also the president of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia College of Surgeons and the Asia Pacific Federation of Coloproctology.
