PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia confirmed six new Covid-19 cases, which included five local transmissions and one import case, says the Health Ministry.

This brings the total number of cases in the country to 8,978 since the outbreak began.

In a press statement Wednesday (Aug 26), Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said all five local cases were detected in Kedah.

Three of them were linked to the Tawar cluster, currently the biggest active cluster with 73 confirmed cases since August 12.

On the other two local transmissions, both were detected at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar.

One was a Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) patient, while another was confirmed following a screening on symptomatic patients.

Dr Noor Hisham said the sole import case involved a foreigner infected abroad who had arrived in the country from Singapore.

Malaysia also discharged seven more patients, which means the total number of recoveries is 8,978, or a rate of 96.6%.

The total number of active cases in the country is now at 188 cases.

Nine people have been admitted into intensive care units, with six of them requiring ventilator support.

No deaths were reported, which means the country’s death toll remains at 125 deaths, or a fatality rate of 1.35%.

The last Covid-19 related death in Malaysia was on July 31.
