2021 school year to begin and end later

PETALING JAYA: The 2021 school year will begin and end later than usual to ensure there are still 194 school days in the academic calendar.

The school year will begin on Jan 20 and end on Dec 9 for schools in Johor, Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu, while it will end on Dec 10 next year for schools in the other states, Education Ministry deputy director-general (school operation sector) Adzman Talib said.

Schools also would not have to replace the special allocated holidays for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and Deepavali, he said in a circular dated Aug 14.

The mid-year break is back to its original nine days and will be from May 28 or May 29, until June 12 or June 13, depending on the state. The year-end holidays begin on Dec 10 or Dec 11 until Dec 31,2021.

This follows Education Minister Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin’s Aug 3 announcement in Parliament that the dates for the new school year were decided after taking into consideration the effects of Covid-19.

Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia (PAGE) chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said it was laudable to maintain the number of school days while pushing back the start date of the 2021 academic year due to the pandemic.

“However, such a move may put us on a collision course with the floods in high prone areas, thus disrupt schooling, ” she said calling on the ministry to take steps to mitigate the impact of the annual year-end floods in the East Coast.

The year-end holidays, which normally begin in November, have been pushed to Dec 10 in 2021.

“Prepare some form of home-based or online learning where possible, ” she said.

The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) secretary-general Harry Tan said teachers were still in the dark over national exam dates.

He said the 2021 calendar was not the norm so full details needed to be furnished.

“Teachers need to know the exam dates so that we can prepare our lesson plan.

“The ministry needs to give us more information so that schools, teachers, parents and the public can plan ahead.

“Even the tourism industry needs to know these details, ” he said.
