Covid-19: 25 new cases, 12 from Sivagangga cluster spreads to Perlis, Penang


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 25 new Covid-19 cases on Friday (Aug 7), with 12 of them related to the persons under investigation (PUI) of the Sivagangga cluster in Napoh, Kubang Pasu, Kedah.

Health director-general Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this brings the total number of infections to 9,063 cases.

Out of the 25 new cases, 16 were locally transmitted cases involving 15 Malaysians and one non-citizen.

“In Perlis, there are now 10 new cases from the PUI Sivagangga cluster.

“In Kedah and Penang, there is one case each from the PUI Sivagangga cluster, ” he said in his daily press statement on Friday (Aug 7).

In Perak, there were two cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and in Kuala Lumpur, there was one case whereby the patient had been admitted to Hospital Sungai Buloh.

He said that the sole local transmission case involving a non-citizen was of a detained undocumented immigrant in Johor.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said the remaining nine cases were imported and involved eight Malaysians and one non-citizen.

The imported cases were of infections that happened abroad in the Philippines, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Djibouti, Australia and Yemen.

He added that the country saw no new Covid-19 deaths, keeping the death toll at 125.

Dr Noor Hisham also said 15 patients had recovered on Friday, with a total of 8,728 patients discharged since Covid-19 outbreak began.

Malaysia’s Covid-19 recovery rate is now at 96.3% out of the total number of positive cases.

There are currently 210 active cases being treated at the country’s health facilities.

At present, two patients are being treated at the intensive care units (ICU), with one patient requiring ventilator support.
