Covid-19 spike: 41 new cases, death toll remains at 121

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia recorded 41 cases on Monday (June 15), taking the total number of infections in the country to 8,494.

Out of the 41 new cases, three were imported cases involving returning Malaysians who were infected abroad.

Of the 38 local transmission cases, six were Malaysians, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah at the Health Ministry’s daily Covid-19 media briefing.

Of the six, one was an acute respiratory infection (ARI) case at an old folks home in Kuala Selangor that was detected at the Tanjung Karang Hospital in Selangor.

The other five were either detected from close contacts of Covid-19 patients or from tahfiz school screenings in Sabah, Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Melaka.

There were 32 locally transmitted cases involving foreigners, and they included 14 cases at the Akademi Imigresen Malaysia in Port Dickson, which involved detainees who were transferred there from the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot.

Another 15 were from the Pedas cluster in Negri Sembilan and two from the cleaning services company cluster.

Dr Noor Hisham also said 54 cases have been discharged, which means 7,400 patients have recovered from Covid-19 since the outbreak began.

Malaysia’s Covid-19 recovery rate is now at 87.1% out of the total number of positive cases.

There are now 973 active cases being treated at the country’s health facilities.

Currently, there are four patients treated at intensive care units (ICU) and non are on ventilator support.

Dr Noor Hisham announced no new deaths, which means the death toll remains at 121 cases.

Malaysia is currently under the recovery movement control order (MCO) phase which is scheduled to end on Aug 31.

Under the recovery MCO, social distancing rules continue to apply but many more sectors will be reopened, including schools and social activities.

Border control on outsiders continue to be enforced but interstate and domestic travel are now allowed.
