PETALING JAYA: All 7,000 registered childcare centres (taska) can operate starting Tuesday (June 2), says Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said that the government has decided to allow the remaining 6,696 nurseries to operate immediately, following the tabling of satisfactory and comprehensive SOPs for the childcare centres by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry on Tuesday.

“We have agreed with the new SOPs, which we find to be comprehensive and so we have allowed all remaining taska to operate. The SOPs can be seen on the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry website, ” he said during his daily briefing.

Prior to this, 304 out of the 7,000 nurseries were already given permission to operate based on basic standard operating procedures (SOPs) approved by the government.

On the reopening, Ismail Sabri said that this will hopefully help working parents who were unable to go to work due to having no one to look after their children at home.

He said there were also employers who forced their workers to take unpaid leave if they needed to be home with their children, although the government had explicitly warned against it.

For preschools or kindergartens (tadika and tabika), he said that their SOPs will be coordinated by the Education Ministry before they are allowed to operate.

“This coordination process by the Education Ministry is important because the management of tadika and tabika is currently under the supervision of multiple Ministries, ” he said.

On religious institutions, Ismail Sabri said that the SOPs for religious activities, including congregational prayers at mosques and activities at houses of worship, will be tabled at the ministerial meeting this Saturday (June 6).

He added that the SOPs for barbershops, hair salons and night markets will also be tabled in the same meeting.
