KUALA LUMPUR: A 46-year-old man was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment and fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday (Oct 21) for trespassing on a university residential college.
Muhammad Shahril Farid Shafaruddin pleaded guilty to the criminal trespass charge before Magistrate Nurul Izzah Hasan Basri.
According to the charge sheet, the act was committed at around 9.50am on Oct 20 in Room SB2-04 at Tun Syed Zahiruddin Residential College, Universiti Malaya, in Pantai Dalam.
The offence was framed under Section 448 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code.
Muhammad Shahril was also ordered to serve an additional four months in jail if he failed to pay the fine.
During mitigation, his lawyer Mohd Yusri Abdul Aziz told the court that his client was single and worked as a freelance speaker, earning only about RM2,000 a month.
“He also has to care for his elderly mother who suffers from high blood pressure and lives alone,” he told the court.
Mohd Yusri appealed for a lenient sentence, saying his client’s guilty plea had saved the court time and costs.
“To this I would recommend for him to be given as light a sentence as possible,” he said.
Police prosecuting officer Naresh Kumar Mahalingam appeared for the prosecution.
