PETALING JAYA: Three party presidents of Perikatan Nasional met Kedah Ruler Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah to present 23 statutory declarations (SDs) from state assemblymen proposing a new candidate for the Kedah mentri besar post.

PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, who was present at the meeting at Istana Kedah in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, said the presidents of Umno, PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) informed the Sultan that their parties agreed with the candidate that had been named in the SDs to replace Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.

He said the assemblymen decided to send the SDs to the Sultan because they felt these would hold up better in a court of law compared to a vote of no-confidence in the state assembly.

At the meeting were Bersatu’s Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Prime Minister, Umno’s Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

The meeting with the Sultan came just an hour after an announcement by Mukhriz that he was still Kedah Mentri Besar.

It is believed that the 23 state assemblymen have proposed Jeneri assemblyman and Kedah PAS deputy commissioner 1 Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor as the new mentri besar.

There are 36 state elected representatives in Kedah, which means the 23 assemblymen make up nearly two-thirds of the state assembly.

“The meeting was an amicable one and the Sultan agreed to receive the SDs,” Takiyuddin said yesterday.

It is not known when Sultan Sallehuddin will make an announcement on the matter.

A source said that the Sultan might meet the 23 assemblymen individually to check on the SDs before making a decision, as it is his prerogative.

Under the Kedah state constitution, the MB is appointed by the Sultan on the basis that the Sultan believes the candidate has the support of the majority of the state assembly.

If Mukhriz is ousted, this will be the fourth Pakatan state to fall to Perikatan, after Melaka, Johor and Perak.

His ouster will also mean that Perak is the only remaining state to be under Bersatu in the Perikatan government.

Mukhriz decided to stay on with Pakatan in support of his father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the latter resigned as prime minister on Feb 24, rejecting Muhyiddin as the eighth Prime Minister.

Since the Perikatan government was formed on March 1, Mukhriz has openly criticised Muhyiddin for the move to lead Bersatu out of Pakatan.

Mukhriz then managed to continue as Kedah MB as a Bersatu state assemblyman of Jitra but under Pakatan, while the majority of his party supported Perikatan.
