PUTRAJAYA: The police arrested 554 people for violating the movement control order (MCO) on Sunday (April 5), says Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said that this is a 51% increase compared to the 368 arrests recorded on Saturday (April 4), adding that this was also an increase after four days of declining arrests.
“I was informed that many are using Sunday as an opportunity to go out. Please don’t assume that it is alright to go out on Sunday, because it is not alright. Unless there is an immediate or critical need, everyone must stay at home, ” he said.
Ismail Sabri said that the authorities put up 743 roadblocks nationwide on Sunday and inspected 203,051 vehicles and of the 554 individuals arrested, 489 individuals were jailed and 65 were allowed bail.
A total of 6,048 arrests have been made between March 18 and April 5.
Ismail Sabri also said that authorities under the Housing and Local Government Ministry conducted disinfections of 56 areas in nine states, including 27 in Johor and six areas in Sarawak on Sunday.
The operation encompassed 113 areas including places of worship, public markets, supermarkets and residential areas.
He added that 19 government buildings and three People’s Housing Projects (PPR) involving 4,872 residential units were also disinfected.
