SEBERANG PERAI: Penang-based scheduled waste management group Shan Poornam has taken the initiative to provide 100,000 pieces of surgical masks to frontliners in the ongoing fight against the Covid-19 spread in Malaysia.

The move, which saw the company proactively sourcing for the masks from China, was aimed at supporting the efforts of frontliners in different capacities, including medical staff at government hospitals, the police, immigration and environmental officials amongst others.

Aside from contributing 100,000 masks to frontliners, Shan Poornam also distributed 20,000 pieces to its staff and their families to help them keep safe in the current challenging situation.

“Since we understand how critical the shortages are in the country, we are happy to share what we have. Shan Poornam is allocating 100,000 pieces of masks to Frontliners and 20,000 pieces for our staff and (their) families.

“This is not about wanting you to thank Shan Poornam for its contribution, but rather Shan Poornam is grateful to all Frontliners who fight for other people’s lives by risking their own lives. Shan Poornam is grateful we are able to support through this small contribution.

“We salute all frontliners. All doctors, nurses and medical staff - we pay them our highest tribute for sacrificing their health and safety for their fellow Malaysians, ” said Shan Poornam chief executive officer Datuk Selvakumar Shanmugam.

He also gave thanks to police officers spending time away from their families to protect the country by maintaining peace and order in local communities, the local council teams ensuring daily waste and garbage collection, the Department of Environment (DOE) staff working to ensure a clean, safe and healthy environment for Malaysians even during the movement control order period, as well as members of the press at the forefront creating awareness on the latest Covid-19 news and developments.

Incorporated in 1960 in Penang, Shan Poornam started in used timber industries trading. Today, it has today grown into a regional group with an integrated, environmentally-sound management facility to manage 5,000 metric tons of hazardous and non-hazardous industrial - such as electronic waste, spent acids, alkalines, solvents, sludges, dross and non-ferrous metal scraps - on a monthly basis.

With 500 trained industry experts in its offices across East and West Malaysia, the group’s strength also lies in its innovative research and design team that has produced leading edge technology equivalent to those created in Europe, the United States and Japan.
