Support govt’s work, Dr M tells alliance-seeking Opposition

PUTRAJAYA: Show your support for the good things carried out by the government, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has told Opposition parties said to be interested in working with him.

This was especially so when they were in Parliament, said the Prime Minister.

“In Parliament, when we do something right, I think they should support and not just oppose blindly,” he said.

Speaking to reporters after a session with the Education Ministry staff here yesterday, Dr Mahathir said he was aware of talk that Umno and PAS wanted to work with him.

“I told them, ‘If you want to work with me, then just support (me)’,” he added.

On whether he welcomed such an alliance, he said: “Anybody who supports me, I feel like floating.”

He was commenting on reports that Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had allegedly said the party must work with Dr Mahathir as PAS was doing so.

However, Ahmad Zahid has come under fire from Umno supreme council member Datuk Lokman Nor Adam over the matter.

Lokman, who claimed he had an audio recording of Ahmad Zahid speaking on the matter, said Umno needed leaders who were prepared to fight to defend the people and not those who were “willing to compromise with those in power”.

All eyes will be on the Umno supreme council meeting today.

PAS had, on several occasions, openly said that the party would continue to support Dr Mahathir to remain as Prime Minister until the end of his term.
