RoS has lifted suspension, says MTUC

PETALING JAYA: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has lifted its suspension of the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC), which was imposed last Dec 19.

According to MTUC, the suspension was lifted because the RoS was satisfied with MTUC's explanation on several issues that were raised based on complaints lodged by “certain disgruntled individuals”.

The suspension was imposed by RoS after it received complaints last July that MTUC was not being managed properly.

“MTUC is pleased to announce that the RoS Selangor has lifted the suspension on MTUC, which was imposed on Dec 19,2019.

“In a letter to MTUC received Tuesday (Jan 14), the RoS also informed that it would not take any action to deregister MTUC, ” said MTUC president Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor and secretary general J. Solomon in a joint statement issued on Wednesday (Jan 15).

In the letter, the RoS also instructed MTUC to issue relevant notifications as soon as possible to organise the MTUC Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC), in accordance with the MTUC Constitution.

“RoS also said that it will monitor MTUC, especially in ensuring that the TDC is held in accordance with the rules and regulations prescribed in the MTUC constitution.”

Abdul Halim and Solomon said the MTUC leadership had already called for a Special General Council Meeting on Feb 2 in order to hold the TDC.

“At this meeting, the Council will decide on all relevant matters and preparations pertaining to the TDC, in accordance with the rules of MTUC's constitution.

They also called on all MTUC members to give full support to the leadership in the coming weeks to ensure that the TDC was held in the true spirit of democracy and integrity.

“The MTUC elections held at the TRDC must strengthen and reinforce our organisation’s credibility in the eye of the workers and the rakyat, ” they added.

“The MTUC leadership will undertake all measures necessary for the TDC to be held with full transparency and integrity. The RoS’ desire to play a role towards this end is acknowledged and appreciated.”

Abdul Halim and Solomon said they were pleased that the RoS made its “decision speedily in the interest of workers and trade unions in the country”.

They also said that the decision by RoS to revoke the temporary suspension and not taking any action to deregister MTUC proved that MTUC had carried out its functions responsibly and was able to satisfactorily reply to queries by the RoS.
