Unacceptable: Former MTUC leader Abdullah Sani vows to sort out mess

KLANG: Former Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) leaders are fuming at what is happening to the organisation.

The MTUC, which represents the nation’s private sector workforce unions, has been temporarily suspended by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) for alleged mismanagement.

This has prompted its former acting president Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, who is Kapar MP, to declare that he would be stepping in to correct what has gone wrong.

“As soon as the ROS lifts the suspension, and an election is held to select the MTUC’s leadership, I am going to contest the president’s post," said Abdullah.

An elected deputy president, Abdullah became the MTUC’s acting president after the death of then president Mohd Khalid Atan in January 2016.

“I have been a part of the MTUC since 1984, and I cannot accept what has happened to the congress," he said.

Abdullah, who is from the National Union of Commercial Workers (NUCW), said both incumbent MTUC president Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor and secretary-general J. Solomon must be held responsible for the damage that has been done to the congress.

“They have violated the MTUC constitution by not holding the triennial delegates conference.

“Both of them have also not called for general council meetings, as well as the working committee meetings, for over two years," he fumed.

He added that his decision to contest the president’s post was final, saying that both Halim and Solomon must be removed from the umbrella body’s leadership line-up.

Meanwhile, former MTUC secretary-general G. Rajasekaran said Halim and Solomon had let down MTUC’s affiliate unions with their failure to administer the organisation in accordance with its rules and constitution.

“This has brought disrepute to the good name of MTUC.

“In the 70 years history of MTUC, this is the first time that it has been served with a suspension notice," said Rajasekaran.
