MCA membership up by 2,739

IPOH: MCA has seen an influx of new members – including youths and professionals – since the 14th General Election, says Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.

The party deputy president said some among them joined as they wanted a check and balance on the government.

“There are also those who became disillusioned and disappointed with the government.

“They felt deceived by the false hope given (by Pakatan Harapan) which failed to deliver on its manifesto, ” he told reporters after welcoming former state Gerakan secretary Liew Kar Tuan into MCA during a simple ceremony here yesterday.

“Since the general election, we have welcomed some 2,739 new members, ” he said.

“We didn’t go out to recruit them. All of them joined on their own accord, ” he added.

Dr Mah said he was aware that more people, including former and current members of several political parties, were also keen to join MCA.

“As long as they agree with our vision and mission to build a better Malaysia, they are welcome, ” he said.

Liew, 57, a lawyer by profession, said he opted to join MCA because he felt that it was the right platform for him to serve the community.

“More so, as they are now open to all Malaysians, which I feel is a good thing, ” he said, adding that he had quit Gerakan in January this year.

“I’ve also recruited 10 of my friends to join MCA, ” he said, adding that more of his friends have planned to do the same.

Liew had contested in GE14 against DAP’s Jenny Choy for the Canning state seat but lost.

State MCA vice-chairman Tony Khoo said Liew would be joining the Ipoh Timur division.
