SEREMBAN: Seremban will officially attain city status on Jan 1, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (pic).
He said that the state administration has also identified the first mayor and secretary for the Seremban City Council and added that their names would be announced soon.
Aminuddin said the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir wil make the proclamation on Jan 20.
"We have decided to have Seremban declared a city on Jan 1 next year and have also identified the candidates for mayor and secretary. Their names would be made official in due course," he said.
The state administration had merged the Seremban and Nilai municipal councils to pave the way for the setting up of the Seremban City Council.
The Cabinet together with the then Housing, Urban Well-being and Local Government Ministry had approved an application by the state government for city status for Seremban back in April 2012.
Despite the approval from the federal authorities, former mentri besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan decided against declaring Seremban a city and had for years worked on improving the public infrastructure and basic amenities here.
It finally decided to do so on Jan 14,2019, but this was again deferred by the new state Pakatan Harapan government led by Aminuddin after it won the general election in May last year.
