>The appearance of live eels may be unappetising for many, but for foodstall owner Zaid Lizaldi, 38, the slimy and slippery snake-like fish are a hit with customers, reported BH Ahad.“I can guarantee that if you taste the eel served in tomyam, stir-fried with turmeric, tamarind sauce, spiced or in a sweet and sour dish, you will come back for more”, said Zaid, who is better known as Amer Belut.
His Gerai Amer Kelantan is located in Kampung Bharu, Kuala Lumpur and operates from 5pm to 4am daily.
“The live eels will be put in an ice-filled tub which is closed for five minutes for them to ‘pass out’”, he said when explaining the steps of preparing an eel-based dish.
Before they are cleaned, the eels will be boiled for three minutes to remove any unpleasant smell, he added.
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) pilot, Kapten Mohd Arif Ibrahim, 53, who regularly eats eel in Japan, also commented about his first time experience eating at the stall.
“I really enjoyed the eel cooked in tamarind sauce as the fish meat was chewy and had no pungent smell.
“That is definitely a plus point for Gerai Amer Kelantan!”
