KANGAR: Perlis police have barred controversial preacher Zakir Naik from speaking at a three-day programme in the state this weekend.
State police chief Senior Asst Comm Noor Mushar Mohd said that Zakir could come to Perlis but was not allowed to speak publicly.
“There are 150 police reports against him and it’s best he and his family steer clear of the programme this weekend.
“In fact, I am calling on the organisers of the ‘Malaysia Reverts Camp 2019’ to call off their event as it could threaten the peace and harmony enjoyed by the people.
“If Zakir doesn’t adhere to the conditions imposed and speaks at the event, action will be taken against him under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, ” SAC Noor Mushar said at a press conference at the state police headquarters yesterday.
The Perlis police action comes after the preacher allegedly questioned the loyalty of Malaysian Indians and described Malaysian Chinese as mere “guests” in the country.
SAC Noor Mushar added that if Zakir wants to give any future talks, a 10-day notice must be given, including the subject of his talk.
In George Town, about 10 people holding banners that read “Jangan menzalimi Dr Zakir Naik (Don’t be cruel to Dr Zakir Naik)” gathered at Masjid Jamek in Lebuh Acheh after Friday prayers.
A spokesman for the group said the protesters were not from any particular organisation but were merely showing support for the preacher to remain in the country.
