DAP rep withdraws report, makes peace with khat egg-pelter

IPOH: Menglembu assemblyman Steven Chaw has met and made peace with the man who pelted his service centre here with eggs on Sunday (Aug 4) over the Jawi calligraphy issue.

In a statement issued on Monday, Chaw said the man, Chow Siok Ming, was arrested and had his statement taken at the Kampung Tawas police station the previous night.

“He was arrested despite my special assistant having rescinded the police report.

“He was released on Monday at about 1.45am, ” Chaw said.

“I managed to speak with Chow for 30 minutes, and we exchanged opinions peacefully, ” he added.

The egg-pelting incident is said to have occurred on Sunday evening, with video clips of the incident being shared subsequently on social media.

In the 8min 20sec clip, Chow berated DAP for betraying the Chinese community over the recent announcement that khat would be taught to Year Four pupils as part of the Bahasa Melayu syllabus.

Having spoken to the man, Chaw said he was a caring citizen who was concerned with the latest development in the matter.

“I will not take any further action against him.

“We always listen to the people and our doors are always opened. We will continue our work to give the best service to the people and country, ” he added.
