IPOH: The Rural and Regional Development Ministry is focusing in getting more women from rural areas to be entrepreneurs.
Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun (pic) said many of them were unaware how to get help to expand their businesses.
Thus, she said the ministry, through its various agencies like the Community Development Department (Kemas), have been organising various programmes.
"For instance, the 'Wanita Inspirasiku' (Wins) event by Kemas Perak on Sunday (Aug 4) is one of them.
"The ministry has plans to enhance the income of such women from rural areas, and guide them through," she told reporters after launching the Wins event with the theme "Village women going Global" at a hotel here.
Rina added that majority of women entrepreneurs from rural areas have not registered their businesses with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), which is a basic requirement.
"Therefore, Kemas is working with the ministry to help women register their businesses with SSM.
"There are many success stories from women in rural areas who have made it big, and we want more of such stories to emerge," she added.
Rina said with proper guidance and monitoring, entrepreneurs would be able to progress further.
"Women are no longer just seen as housewives who only take care of children, but they have the potential to be great entrepreneurs," she added.
In a related matter, Rina said Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM),which produced many successful entrepreneurs, also hopes to increase its membership to 400,000 by end of the year.
She said currently there were about 300,000 members, with 99% of them being women entrepreneurs.
"We want to get more members under the B40 group to join AIM.
"We want them to pursue entrepreneurship as a career, and not just do small time businesses.
"They need to think big, and expand their businesses with our help," she added.
