PAS lambasts proposal to decriminalise drug addiction, addicts

PETALING JAYA: PAS hit out at Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad for pushing a controversial initiative to decriminalise drug addicts as well as drug addiction.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this would have a catastrophic effect on the nation and future generations as drugs could harm "brains and nerves".

"Decriminalising drug addicts will not help resolve this long-standing problem. It could even worsen the problem.

"For as long as there is a demand, the supply chain will remain intact because addicts will find ways and means to get the drugs," he said.

The Health Minister had proposed to drop penalty charges against those in possession of drugs for "personal use".

However, he added that the proposal should not be misconstrued as a move to legalise addictive substance.

"Drug trafficking will continue for as long as drug addicts exist," said Tuan Ibrahim, adding that it would be more logical to eradicate the supply chain at all costs, instead of allowing space for the cycle to continue.

"Concerted efforts need to be taken to rehabilitate the social system, and use Islam as the core to build the community.

"Free lifestyle and freedom to satisfy lust at will only lead to catastrophe," he said.
