KUALA LUMPUR: Umno veteran Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz chided Datuk Seri Najib Razak for claiming that the decline in Chinese support was due to the former tourism minister’s disparaging remarks against tycoon Robert Kuok.

According to the Padang Rengas MP, dwindling Chinese support towards Barisan Nasional had already begun long before he criticised Kuok for supporting DAP despite benefiting from government projects during the former government administration.

Nazri said his disparaging remarks against Kuok were made in defence of Najib, who was the then-prime minister.

“The trend of the Chinese not supporting Najib has long been there. Even if I don’t defend Najib on Kuok, they would still lose. Nothing to do with my statement.

“So, Najib should check his facts,” he told reporters when met at Parliament lobby on Monday (July 15).

Nazri was responding to Najib, who remarked in an event at Batu Kawan on Sunday (July 14), that he was told by MCA that the decline in Chinese support was partly due to Nazri’s remarks on Kuok.

Najib’s remarks came following Nazri's criticism of his (Najib's) appointment as the chairman of the Barisan advisory board.

Meanwhile, Nazri appeared unfazed over his disparaging remarks, saying that there was nothing wrong because he does not represent Umno as a party for his statement.

“I’m only the Padang Rengas Umno division chief. In Umno, they say they practise democracy. So what’s wrong with us criticising some move by the party without consulting the supreme council?” Nazri said.

Nazri added that Najib’s appointment was a decision made by Umno and Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“It was a decision made by him (Dr Ahmad Zahid) and I have every right to speak my piece. No one can gag me,” said Nazri.

Nazri was referring to Najib’s appointment as the Barisan advisory board chairman, which wasn’t referred to the Umno supreme council.

Najib’s appointment, however, was unanimously agreed to by the Barisan Nasional supreme council.
