KUALA LUMPUR: Star Foundation has received the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Leadership Award at the CSR Malaysia Awards 2019.
The Star Media Group Bhd’s charitable arm is recognised for its efforts in supporting and offsetting the expenses of various social organisations.
The annual CSR Malaysia Awards is organised by CSR Malaysia with the support of the Women, Family & Community Development Ministry, where outstanding public-listed companies are honoured for their CSR efforts.
Since 2007, Star Foundation has helped more than 180 social organisations by donating over RM18.2mil.
The foundation has taken its noble initiatives even further by starting the Medical Fund Programme and the Wheelchair Programme.
The Medical Fund Programme was introduced in 2015 to support young underprivileged people aged below 17 who suffer from chronic illnesses by funding their medical treatment and care.
The Wheelchair Programme, which started in 2017, has contributed 183 wheelchairs to needy individuals and non-profit organisations. Star Media Group corporate communications senior manager Siti Hajar Abdul Rahman received the award from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
In his speech, CSR Malaysia chairman Datuk R. Rajendran said even small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) carry out CSR activities for the underprivileged and marginalised communities.
According to a CSR Malaysia survey on 550 SMEs in 2018, about 35% of them spent up to RM10,000 on their efforts while 13% spent up to RM50,000.
Another 7% spent more than RM50,000 while about 28% spent between RM1 and RM1,000.
Only 17% of those surveyed did not make any effort towards CSR.
Rajendran also said CSR is about doing anything possible to bring out positive changes in society.
“CSR is not about how much we can do but doing what we can do,” he said.
