BATU GAJAH: A new university, which comprises a college and an international school, will be set up in Tronoh soon, says Perak Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Yong Choo Kiong.
He said an agreement had been signed between the state government and UCSI University last month.
"We are currently facing some issues with the land status, but once everything is settled, construction will begin by the end of this year.
"We have determined the location for the construction. It comprises about 24.28ha of land," he told a press conference in Tronoh near here on Thursday (June 13).
"The construction would take at least three years to complete," said Yong, who is also Tronoh assemblyman.
"Tronoh is the perfect location for the university since it is situated in the centre of the state with various access to public transport systems," he added.
On a separate matter, Yong said research needed to be done before implementing the "No Plastic Day" in Perak.
"Unlike Penang, our state has over 10 local governments (PBT), while Penang only has two.
"They have also launched the 'No Plastic Day' programme earlier than us, and if Perak plans to start our own Plastic Day, it must be done in stages," he said.
State Health, Consumer Affairs, National Integration and Human Resources Committee chairman A. Sivanesan was reported to have suggested an extension to the state's weekly "No-Plastic Bag" campaign in shops to three days in a week.
