Witness: Najib shocked and upset money transferred into his accounts

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here was told that Datuk Seri Najib Razak (pic) appeared “shocked and upset” upon learning that a huge amount of money was transferred into his private accounts.

Ihsan Perdana managing director Datuk Dr Shamsul Anwar Sulaiman, 58, however, said that the former prime minister did not instruct him to lodge a report either with the police or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Com­mission (MACC) pertaining to the transactions.

He said Najib showed such reactions when they met at his (Najib’s) residence in Langgak Duta here after he (Shamsul Anwar) was remanded by the MACC in 2015.

The 37th witness said this during re-examination by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muham­mad Saifuddin Hashim Musaimi in Najib’s graft trial involving alleged misappropriation of RM42mil in SRC International Sdn Bhd’s funds yesterday.

Shamsul Anwar said he went to see Najib after he was released from remand.

Saifuddin: You said he was shocked and upset after learning that somebody had transferred money into his accounts. Did he tell you to lodge a police report or to report to the MACC?

Shamsul Anwar: No.

When cross-examined by Najib’s lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, the witness reiterated that Najib was shocked when told about the money transferred into his account.

Muhammad Shafee: How was his reaction?

Shamsul Anwar: He was shocked and upset. He said somebody put the money in his accounts and that he did not even know about the transactions.

To another question by Muhammad Shafee, he said Najib’s reaction was genuine and was not an “act”.

Muhammad Shafee: If you knew they were Najib’s accounts, would you not transfer the money?

Shamsul Anwar: Yes.

Muhammad Shafee: You can also go to his home or office to ask regarding the corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects?

Shamsul Anwar: Yes, and also through SMS and WhatsApp.

Muhammad Shafee: You are very comfortable with Najib?

Shamsul Anwar: Yes.

He added that most of the CSR programmes under Ihsan Perdana were Najib’s ideas and he had wanted to help alleviate the suffering of the people.
